Those who need a car with good capacity to carry luggage usually pay attention only to the volume of the trunk as a decisive factor of purchase. There is, however, another issue that cannot be overlooked: the payload, a number that determines the maximum weight that the vehicle can accommodate. With five people on board and the compartment full of volumes, it is not difficult to extrapolate this determination, which can compromise the car's durability and occupant safety.
This is explained by Gerson Burin, technical coordinator of the Center for Experimentation and Road Safety in Brazil (Cesvi / Mapfre): “The projects, engineering, calculations and tests of vehicle development are what determine the load limits for each type of vehicle . Excess weight can cause damage to components and impair handling, thus compromising safety ”.
Among the possible problems of durability related to excess weight pointed out by Cesvi-Mapfre, are “the increase in brake and suspension wear”. In addition, the performance of these components often undergoes serious changes, compromising the vehicle's handling.
So that the practice of loading the car does not result in financial or other losses, the entity recommends that the driver is always aware of the transportable weight and respects it. If the trunk space is not enough and the driver chooses to install a roof rack, the weight limit must also be observed. "Excess load can damage the equipment and even its points of attachment to the body, which can cause the luggage to detach and fall, damage to the hood and even severe changes in the vehicle's center of gravity", explains Burin.
In addition to not being overweight, the load attached to the roof “cannot exceed the side of the vehicle and its maximum height must be 50 cm above the roof line”, recommends Cesvi-Mapfre. The mass accommodated in the luggage compartment, of course, must not be calculated separately: it is included in the vehicle's payload. This information, as well as the maximum towable weight, is also described in the manual.
Even without overload, crowded car requires care
Even if the maximum weight is respected, the road safety agency recommends that the driver be extra careful: “with the car loaded, the braking capacity decreases, in other words, longer time and distance are needed to completely stop the vehicle. In addition to the brakes, excess baggage impacts on acceleration, speed recovery and even cornering stability ”.
Another issue remembered by Cesvi-Mapfre is that the driver must pay attention to the tire pressure before loading the car: “The calibration depends on the occupation and the load, that is, the heavier the vehicle, the higher the tire pressure must be. . The driver must follow the calibration guidelines provided by the assembler, available in the owner's manual ”. Generally, the values are also described on stickers located on the fuel compartment cover or in the driver's door region.
